STILL LIFE
I'm captivated by texture and tones that are in everything from art to artifacts to creation itself. What I can't get my hands on, I learn to create. Sometimes a single piece is fashioned for a painting, sometimes an entire scene. This is about knowing and experiencing what I paint in a deeper way.
After the Fall - Vanitas III - Oil on Canvas 24x36 - Available
The end of strength and power. Light fades, leaves fall and all things return to the earth.
Flesh of my flesh, Bone of my bones - Oil on Canvas 10x20 - Available
Crossed Over on the Carrizo - Oil on Panel 9x12 - Available
This still life painting was created by mounting leftover cracked desert soil that I'd created for the "Miracle of Rain" painting vertically and mounting the skull over it, to simulate a found Pronghorn Antelope skull on the Carrizo Plain in California's Central Valley.
Bury My Heart - Oil on Panel 6x12 Framed - Available
This painting is a still life of a plains indian style strike-a-light bag that I made by hand, antiqued to look very old. The adobe wall setting was hand plastered, painted and aged as well to complete the effect. See the "Making a Scene" feature in the top nav for more information.
The Miracle of Rain - Oil on Canvas 24x48 - Available
The Miracle of Rain is a "Parable Painting," and was an undertaking that involved creating a scene at half scale for this large still life. You can read more about it, and how I compose other paintings in my Making A Scene feature.
Wherever I May Roam - Oil on Panel 12x16 - Sold
I made this Plains Indian style strike a light bag and placed my pipe in it, added the Red Tailed Hawk feathers found on a recent camping trip and it reminded me of all the things we pick up along the way.
White Oak - Oil on Canvas 16x20 - Sold
This setting is a nod to William S. Hart, the legendary actor of silent wester pictures. Old Bill lived just up the hill from me and I love to walk through his place and see the art from Frederic Remington and personal friends like C.M. Russell. His pal Wyatt Earp even has a photo on the mantle. Not bad Bill...
Vanitas II - Oil on Canvas 16x20 - Available
This second Vanitas indicates that power and speed has it's end, the arrow lands, the light that burns brightly does for a time. In the light of the eternal we're reminded to walk in humility and to get wisdom while we can.
Vanitas I - Oil on Canvas 16x20 - Sold
This first Vanitas painting was meant to symbolize strength, provision and abundance, and that these things, like all things, have an end in this life.
